Celery Growing Tips
Crisp, fresh celery stalks can be enjoyed raw as a snack, diced into a chicken salad, or cooked in many dishes. They are a staple ingredient for soups, stews and chicken pot pie. Cutting celery, also known as leaf celery, is harvested for the leaves and narrow stems (petioles). It also can be added to soups, stews and salads.
Planting
- Celery grows best in well-drained, fertile soil. Prior to planting, prepare the soil by incorporating a good quality compost and a balanced fertilizer.
- Space plants 12” apart in a row, with rows 18 to 24” apart.
Watering
Celery requires 1 to 2” of water per week. Make sure to provide regular irrigation if the weather is dry. Celery has a small and shallow root system which can dry out quickly. When celery experiences water stress, it can become stringy. Drip irrigation is an effective and efficient way to irrigate vegetable crops because the water is delivered directly to the soil where it will be taken up by the roots. Drip irrigation also keeps water off of the foliage which will reduce the risk of disease development.
Maintenance
Keep the planting well weeded. Using mulch, such as cocoa mulch, straw, untreated dry grass clippings or shredded leaves will suppress weed growth and help retain soil moisture.
Harvesting
- Stalks may be harvested starting from the outside and moving in, or the whole plant may be harvested all at once when at least 3” in diameter. If the weather is hot and dry, the celery may become tough and bitter.
- Celery can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
- Cutting Celery:
- Stalks can be cut starting from the outside of the plant as needed. These stalks are much thinner than those of regular celery varieties.
