Sweet William Growing Tips
Sweet William, Dianthus barbatus, is a tender perennial that is hardy in zones 6-8, but it is often grown as an annual. A wonderful addition to the garden as an ornamental with its bright and cheery flowers, the flower petals can be used as garnish for salads, desserts and other dishes and have a mild clove-like flavor.
General Care
- Sweet William grows well in fertile, loamy, well-drained soil.
- Full sun (6+ hours) to part sun (4 – 6 hours).
- Plants should be spaced 6” apart.
Harvesting
- Make sure to introduce flowers into your diet slowly and only use small amounts at one time.
- Flower petals can be harvested when the bloom is fully open. Remove the petals from the flower base before use because the base can add a bitter flavor.
