Marigold Growing Tips

The bright and cheery French marigolds, Targetes patula, with flowers in various shades of red, orange and yellow, liven up any garden bed or container. Attractive to pollinators and other beneficials, marigold flowers are also edible and make a fun addition to salads, desserts and other dishes. Petals have a spicy, citrus-like flavor. Annual.

General Care

  • Marigolds need well-drained soil and full sun (6+ hours).
  • The plants tolerate dry soil better than overly wet soil.
  • Plants should be spaced 8 to 12” apart.
  • Marigolds don’t require deadheading, but removing old blooms can help keep the plants neat and tidy and encourage more blooms.

Harvesting

  • Make sure to introduce flowers into your diet slowly and only use small amounts at one time.
  • When harvesting, remove the flower base and use only the petals. The base has a bitter flavor.
