Alyssum Growing Tips

Alyssum, Lobularia maritima, is a fantastic plant to use in the garden or in containers. Not only does its lush carpet of flowers add beauty in the garden bed or when flowing over the edges of a hanging basket, but they are very attractive to flower flies, which are beneficial insects that can help control aphids and other soft-bodied insects in your garden. If that wasn’t enough, the flowers are also edible with a slight peppery flavor. Tender perennial.

General Care

  • Alyssum grows best in well-drained soil with average moisture.
  • Space plants 6 to 8” apart.
  • Use in borders, edgings, rock gardens, containers, hanging baskets, and as a companion plant in the vegetable garden.
  • Plants can be cut back occasionally throughout the season as the flowers begin to fade which will encourage new growth and repeat blooms.

Harvesting

  • Make sure to introduce flowers into your diet slowly and only use small amounts at one time.
  • Flowers can be harvested for use once they are open.
