Calendula Growing Tips
Calendula, Calendula officinalis, is a member of the daisy family. This plant is a great choice for adding to borders and containers, and the bright, cheery blooms are attractive to pollinators. In the kitchen, petals can be used in various soups, rice dishes and baked goods, as well as for a fun garnish on salads and desserts. Annual.
General Care
- Calendula grows best in well-drained soil in full sun (6+ hours).
- The plants will flower the best with moderate water and not too much fertilizer. Adding too much fertilizer will encourage leafy growth instead.
- Regular deadheading will encourage more blooms.
Harvesting
- Make sure to introduce flowers into your diet slowly and only use small amounts at one time.
- Harvest petals as needed. Make sure to remove the flower base before use because it is bitter.
