Cornflower Growing Tips

Cornflower, Centaurea cyanus, also known as bachelor button, is a great flower to use as a cutting or bedding plant. The flowers are edible and have a mild, sweet floral flavor. They can be used as a fun and colorful addition for decorating desserts or garnishing a salad. The flowers are also attractive to beneficial insects. Annual.

General Care

  • Cornflower grows best in well-drained soil.
  • Prefers average soil moisture but will tolerate drier conditions. 
  • Plants should be spaced 6 to 9” apart in full sun (6+ hours) or part sun (4 to 6 hours).

Harvesting

  • Make sure to introduce flowers into your diet slowly and only use small amounts at one time.
  • Flowers should be harvested when fully open.
  • Remove the petals and rinse (discard the flower base). Can be used fresh or dried.
  • Also makes a great cut flower!
